Is it possible to shield equipment that is installed in the passenger side air bag deployment zone in a manner that will allow full and safe air bag deployment?Due to the complexity of influencing variables, GM is unable to evaluate the potential for shielding expected equipment configurations in all accident scenarios in order to assure that the air bag performance would be unaffected. While shielding may protect certain equipment from being damaged or dislodged, it may also negatively affect the inflation characteristics of the air bag. The air bags shape, inflation angle, fold pattern, and inflation rate and pressure are developed to maximize the protection capability of the inflatable restraint system. Therefore, GM cannot recommend the placement of any equipment in the deployment zone, even if it is shielded to protect it from damage.

Beginning the 2001 model year, Ford and General Motors Police Interceptors have a “Dual Stage” airbag. This means that, depending on computer read circumstances, the airbag will deploy at different rates of inflation. We exclusively manufacture the, Double U.S. Patented, switch designed for this type of deployment.

The Remote Status Light “Plugs” into the Basic switch box. The Status Light allows placement of the primary switch box into virtually any position within the vehicle’s interior.

As of the 2002 model year, A.O.I.’s airbag switch is offered through General Motors’ official Police Upfitter; Kerr Industries. We are also the referred airbag switch vendor of Ford Parts.

Passenger air bags are expensive. Replacement costs are approximately $850 each…exclusive of down time and other related expenses. Most departments run single man units. A passenger air bag deployment aids No One if No One is there.

Proof Positive Fuse

Standard within every Airbag Switch built, is our PulseFire Fuse. The use of our PulseFire technology eliminates any question of switch position at the time of impact. The fuse‘s condition provides “proof positive” of the status of the air bag switch at the moment of impact. A false claim is virtually impossible.

Beginning with the 2003 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, Ford incorporated a weight sensor within the passenger seat. As per Ford Airbag Engineering in Dearborn, Michigan, “The passenger side airbag WILL DEPLOY with as little as, 7 lbs. of Pressure upon the passenger seat.”

Incorporating a state of the art design, our Airbag Switch (U.S. Patent #’s 6,452,486 B1, & 6,552,657) offers the broadest installation possibilities available. All vehicles can accept our switch with no adverse effect to the SRS computer or diagnostic monitor. Once installed, our switching circuit allows an airbag to be turned ON or OFF while maintaining proper functioning of a vehicle's diagnostic system in either position. The vehicle's air bag warning light on the dash will continue to provide accurate indications of the SRS’ monitoring capabilities.

State Attorney General’s offices and hundreds of municipal attorneys have approved the use of The Switch by their states and cities. Not One of our customers has ever been compelled to defend their use of the Switch.

The Switch is well lit and key operated. The passenger air bag can be instantly reactivated when it is occasionally needed. Your officer is continually aware of the status of the air bag.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a blanket exemption for Law Enforcement vehicles. Federal approval and endorsement is granted, in your department’s name. Aside from The Switch being brightly lit and directly within the officer’s field of vision, a large, yellow and black, Federal government approved, warning label is applied to the passenger air bag dash cover.

Our air bag switch is very similar to the passenger air bag switches installed as standard equipment on all late model pickup trucks. These pickups are being used by municipal governments throughout North America. Consequently, your city’s insurance policy already covers air bag switches. An officer driving a police cruiser equipped with an AirBag Option Switch is more aware his air bag’s status than a city employee driving a pickup with a factory installed air bag switch.
